A premium quality world class 5-string banjo that is appreciated for its crisp tone with great highs and distinctive bass response. The Calico is not only beautiful, but it is also exceptionally dynamic with both powerful sound and response providing an excellent tool for all styles of music.
At this price point two features are added. The inside of the resonator walls are tapered which gives the banjo a much more rich tone as all of the frequencies come out of the banjo - as opposed to banjos with straight resonator sidewalls where some of the frequencies get lost as they bounce back and forth within the resonator. The second upgraded feature is glued-in frets. Each fret is fitted to the fingerboard and glued in place so that in the future when the frets are worn out, they can easily be replaced without chipping the fingerboard.
The heart of the Deering Calico banjo is the Deering -06- bell bronze tone ring which is precisely fitted to the three ply violin grade maple rim. The Deering -06- tone ring produces a beautiful, balanced overtone spectrum. A softer touch will provide you with as much sustain as you ever want, a sharper attack will produce a distinct pop and accurate note separation. You will notice no dead spots over the entire fingerboard. The beautiful highs and powerful well rounded bass is the result of intense study of alloys and shapes resulting in superb sound.

Deering Namm Special Calico with radius fretboard
i love this banjo! everything about it is awesome. this is the third banjo i've purchased from David (Tony Trischka SilverClipper and a John Hartford Deering) in a year. always excellent service and an excellent instrument gets delivered. I highly enjoy the Deering Podcasts he does as well. I've learned a lot thru them and its a blast to see some of banjo "heros" being interviewed. darryl crisp

Excellent service and great Banjo!
The Deering Calico is a beautiful instrument. Arrived fully set up and in tune. Superior and very pleasing tone. I wish I had the talent to play as it deserves to be played.
